Why 'web' ?

Originally, there were other ways of naming and searching documents hosted somewhere out on internet servers. Thus allowing you to transparently ''surf'' from one document to yet another, physically distant document belonging to another website. That creates a virtual 'web' of links between documents residing on different machines.
