A forest has a more complex structure than a plantation, being made up of various species of plants (of non-commercial purposes) and fauna, between which they have complex interactions that ensure that important ecological functions such as pollination, seed dispersal and feeding take place, whereas a plantation contains a single crop which is harvested to be marketed.

A forest also has at least one strata in a given plot of land and it would contain various trees, shrubs, ferns, fungi, insects, small mammals, etc while a plantation would be void of these, with the exception of intentional additions that help protect or pollinate the crops, such as bats.

An orchard usually refers to a grove of trees that produce fruit or nuts. Some orchards may be Hugh but others may be just a dozen trees or so.

A plantation is a name for an entire farm and can also refer to the people who own and operate it. A plantation can specialize in fruit trees and contain orchards.
