A milling machine basically look like a drill press, but with the ability to move the work piece sideways.

A lathe clamp and spin the work piece horizontally and use a stationary tool bit to cut and shape the work piece.

These two are entirely different machines both in geometrically and functionally.

A lathe is a machine for producing cylindrical or spherical jobs. The main parts of a lathe are Head stock, tail stock, bed with guideways, carriage, cross slide tool post, legs, feed box, feed rod, gearbox, lead screw.

The main parts of a milling machine are vertical column housing the spindle, gearbox, longitudinal and transverse saddle and tool harbor.

In a lathe the work piece is holding in a chuck fitted on the spindle, whereas in a milling machine the job will be fitted on saddle.

In a lathe the job is rotating at a stationary position and tool moves against job while cutting operation whereas in a milling machine the tool rotate at a stationary position and job moves against the tool.

In ordinary operating condition round shape cannot be produced from a milling machine where as cylindrical or spherical shape only can be produced in a lathe.

Threading can be done on lathe simply whereas threading is not possible in a milling machine at normal operating condition.

A lathe has headstock and tailstock to hold work pieces, whereas a milling machine don't have both tailstock and headstock and job is holding on a carriage.

In a lathe the spindle is driven by electric motor through belt and pulley arrangement, whereas in a milling machine the electric motor is directly mounted to the column and the drive is given through gear set.

What is the difference between a metal lathe and a wooden lathe?

Milling in a lathe can be two things:A cutter is gripped in the chuck and a workpiece the the tool post. The work piece is then milled by using the feed on the lathe. Although it has been done, it is an unconventional method and is not recommended.A 3-in-1 lathe with a milling attachment as part of the machine used for milling a work piece.

What machines shape metals?

The ones that i use at college and work are a milling machine, a lathe, a drill, and a saw but i think the main ones (In mechanical engineering) are the Milling Machine and the Lathe.

What is profiling on lathe machine?

Vertical milling machine is for cutting large pieces. The lathe cutting tool motion is perpendicular to the ground. They are said to Karosl lathe.

Which one is the correct one in terms of associating them with lathe boring drilling milling and turning?

Although a lathe can bore and drill, it is actually associated with turning. A drilling machine is associated with drilling, a milling machine with milling, and a boring mill with boring.

What is the attachment of lathe machine?

Lathe operation. Milling operation is done with its axis of rotation. The final product is always turning point in the round.

How milling differs from lathe turning?

They both have; spindles, bedways, automatic feeds, work holding equipment, although these vary between machines, both can use digital readout, coolant supply, both have heads - where the gears and spindle are housed. I'm certain I've miss out loads but i would be here forever.

What are the differences between lathe machine and milling machine?

A computer numerically controlled lathe and a computer numerically controlled milling machine differ primarily in their core operations and the kinds of parts they can create. To make pieces like shafts and rings that are both cylindrical and symmetrical, a CNC lathe primarily rotates the workpiece while cutting tools remove material. However, computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines can create more complex forms and features like slots, holes, and curves by using revolving cutting tools to remove material from a fixed workpiece. While CNC lathes excel at generating very precise circular components, CNC milling machines offer greater freedom for producing three-dimensional parts.

What is distance between centers in lathe machine?

All lathes could be considered "centre lathes." You turn "between centers." There's also a tool called a "machining center," but those are for computerized milling, normally of metal.
