Plasma screens emit light, from small gas chambers arranged in the glass screen as a matrix.

LCD use a system of shutters held in liquid crystal between sheets of glass, the light comes from a light source behind, from florescent tubes or white LEDs.

Plasma screens use a series of cells between glass panels which contain neon-xenon gas, when the gas is charged, the image is displayed. LCD uses polymer and a form of liquid crystal to display the image.

Plasma and LCD televisions look very similar to each other and produce images that are generally quite similar. The technology is significantly different although there are some elements that are common to both. Both LCD and plasma televisions process the incoming signal to calculate the red, green and blue content of every pixel on the screen. the calculation is repeated for every frame of the signal, 25 or 30 times each second. LCD uses a light source at the rear of the screen. The individual liquid crystal cells are controlled to allow the light to pass through in different amounts. Every pixel has three LCD cells, one each for red, green and blue. LCDs often cannot block all the light from the rear of the screen, so blacks are sometimes not fully black, limiting the contrast on the screen. Plasma televisions use technology similar to a fluorescent light. Every pixel has three plasma cells. Like the LCD, the cells are used for red, green and blue. As the gas in each cell is ionised by a voltage a tiny amount of phosphor will glow. This is very similar to the older CRT technology. The more energy that is put into the ionised gas, so the brighter the phosphor will glow. Plasma screens are generally capable of higher contrast ratios than LCD because black levels are darker than those of LCD screens. Plasma televisions can suffer from an effect called "plasma burn". High contrast and high brightness images on a plasma screen can degrade the phosphor in the bright areas. Normally this is a continual process that makes the whole image darker over a long period of time. If a static image is left on the screen, the high brightness parts of the image will degrade the phosphors in certain areas. When a new image is displayed, a "shadow" of the static image may be seen. Normally, there is no way to remove the shadow although it will tend to fade over time. LCD televisions have no screen burn problems and are considered a better choice for users of console games for just that reason. However, LCD screens tend not to handle dark images as well as plasma screens. It is important to note that both LCD and plasma technologies are being developed continually. Image quality, brightness and contrast will continue to improve for both. Plasma burn is less of an issue now then when the technology first made an appearance. Power consumption for plasma screens is a little higher than LCD but is becoming less significant. The important factor that affects the choice of a television is how good the picture looks. Although the technologies are very different, it is only your eyes that can decide which is the best for you. Before investing, make sure you get to look at as many as you can and pick the best picture rather than pre-selecting the technology.

LCD (light crystal display) have better resolution and are more energy efficient. If you want a a more vibrant color and deeper black in your picture then the Plasma TV would be best and are less expensive on your wallet.

The basic difference is the technology used where plasma tv's are basically a fluoresent light bulb, and LCD tv's are liquid crystals that emit light based on electric current. LCD generally last longer, and operate with less heat production, while plasma tv's can support a larger picture, and have less motion lag.

There are a few differences between plasma and LCD televisions. Plasma uses electronically charged gas that produces deeper blacks although it suffers when watching in direct sunlight. LCD tv's use individual crystals and are generally cheaper.

It's a completely different technology to start with.Right now the big difference is that Plasma is only competitive at the largest sizes.LCD's below 37" are just cheaper.

Tell me how can i tell the difference between an LCD TV and Plasma TV?

LCD is lighter than Plasma but plasma has a more true black color. Besides price you won't likely notice much difference. Earlier lcd models had trouble showing a true black, but the technology has improved considerably. There still is some difference, but it really comes down to weight and price now.

A plasma television has a higher picture quality over a larger sized screen, and better colour definition, especially deeper blacks. There is also less lag on moving images, and it can be viewed from wider angles.

How are plasma televisions different from LCD?

Plasma TVs use highly heated gases for the picture. LCD use liquid crystal displays. That's the scientific difference. As for the difference you will see, that's up to your eye and your opinion.
