MS Excel 2003 and earlier use the XLS format. MS Excel 2007 and later use the XLSX format.
..xlsx is a Excel 2007 format, whereas .xls is Excel 2003 or earlier. Excel 2007 allows you to save in multiple 2007 formats: ..xlsx - Normal Excel 2007 format ..xlsm - Macro-Enabled format ..xlsb - Binary format Save your files as 2003 under Save as Type and you should be fine.

Unfortunatly, you will need to find a more current version of Excel to access the pivot table. After you do, save the file in compatible format for older version of Excel. Then you should be able to open the file and update the pivot table. However, if someone created the pivot table with Excel 2007 and used any of the new features, those features will be lost when you save in Excel 2003 format. By default Excel should save files in the .xml or .xmlx format (the latter being the default format for Excel 2007 & 2010). Other common formats that Excel accepts include .cvs and .txt. If you have that (or any other format) this is the easiest way to change the format:Open the file in Excel. Select "Save As" from the tile menu/office button (depending on your version of Excel). When you're prompted to select a location and file name, change the file type (using the drop down menu at the bottom of the screen) to Excel workbook (if you're using a version older than 2007) or Excel 97 - 2003 workbook (if you using 2007 or newer).There other methods, but they require slightly higher degrees of technical proficiency than this one.
You can open a 2007 Excel spreadsheet with Excel 2003 if you save the file in Excel 2007 using "Save As" and select the 2003 compatibility mode.
The most obvious visible difference is the ribbon bar (new menu system) displayed by all Office 2007 products. You also will notice a new file format. Excel 2003 uses an extension of XLS, while Excel 2007 uses the extension of XLXS, You can open Excel 2003 files in Excel 2007, but not the other way around. Excel 2007 adds many new functions. For a standard Excel document, prior to Excel 2007, it is xls and xlsx is used in 2007. There are other kinds of files created by Excel, like templates which can be xlt or macros which can be xlm and xla for Add-ins, and there are other extenions. For 2007, you add x to the end of them.
Yes vba written in excel 2003 is usually compatible with excel 2007 but you can never be 100% sure without testing on both platforms. There are however backwards compatability issues namely around activex controls which do not work too well in 2003 but this can be overcome by saving the file in 2003 format
