The conflict was between humans & the local tribes called the Na'vi. Humans want to mine a precious mineral called Unobtanium which is present in the heart of the Navi families. The conflict arises when the Na'vi are not given an opportunity to safeguard their families because of an unexpected attack by the humans. The Na'vi fight back and defend their land.

The conflict in Avatar is a theme that is ancient: aboriginal people are being displaced due to greed. The greedy capitalist are bad and out of touch with nature, the gods, their own humanity...and the native people are good-in touch with their own identity, with nature and the gods.

The internal conflict is the fact that Jake would really love to be able to walk again - and he has been promised this if he helps the marines - but he also is falling in love with the planet and with Neytiri, which means he has to go against the marines and possibly remain paralyzed forever.
