Actually, the poinsettia flower is yellow; the leaves are red.

In wild Poinsettias, the sepals are green, with red at the base. Cultivated varieties are usually red -- but the flowers are always yellow, tiny, and at the center of the "bloom".

Green or yellow is the color of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) flowers.

Specifically, the flower is small and inconspicuous. It is overshadowed by the awesome beauty of the plant's colorful bracts, or modified leaves. The leaves start out green but mature to colors such as pink, red and yellow.

One traditionally thinks of a Poinsettia as a red flower, however, the flower is actually yellow but very small and insignificant. The colored 'flower' that makes the display is produced by the large bracts that surround the little flower. The bracts can be red, cream, pink or white.

Green and red are the original colors of the bracts of poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).

Specifically, bracts are modified leaves. Poinsettia bracts may be true or transitional. True bracts immediately surround the stem tips where the dainty, inconspicuous yellow flowers appear in December. They are always red.

Transitional bracts are located between the true bracts and the plant's regular, green leaves. They start out green, but change color in sync with the initiation, development and culmination of the plant's flowering process. Red is the traditional color that transitional bracts become. But with the scientific and technological changes of the 20th and 21st centuries, many other colors - such as blue and yellow - are possible with access to the plant's internal structure and biochemistry.
