Semi-tropical and tropical climates are the climates to which poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are native.

Specifically, poinsettias are native to southwestern Mexico and Central America. Nowadays they can be grown outside their native range. But success depends upon the meeting of the plant's specific needs. For example, poinsettias cannot be grown in cold climates since the plant is susceptible to fatal injury from the bruising, drying winds of temperatures below their comfort zone of 60-80 degrees F/15.56- 26.67 degrees C.

Ideal growing conditions for poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are the following:

1. Avoidance of bruising of leaves by adequate spacingbetween plants and plant containers inside and out;

2. Control of disease by avoiding under- and over-watering* and by preventing exposure to splashing or standing water and to such pesticides as weed killers;

3. Exposure to intense light, but from a protective position of light shade;

4. Fertile, moist, well-aerated soil with good drainage and low level of total soluble salts;

5. Good sanitation;

6. Humid climate with temperatures ranging in the 60-80 degrees F/15.56-26.67 degrees C range;

7. Regular watering schedule* to avoid drying out, but without waterlogging the soil;

8. Room for the development of fibrous roots: Poinsettias do not like a tight fit in containers or in the ground!

9. Soil pH in the acidic range of 4.5-6.5 that in its upward limits is heading into the neutral zone.

*Generally, plants can be watered every 7-10 days. But the soil regularly can be monitored by look and by touch. A simple, physical check involves sticking a sharp object into the soil. The soil is too dry if the object comes out clean of any particles, too wet if the particles look muddy and just right if tiny soil particles form a freckled, speckled pattern over the object's surface.

Does acidity hurt poinsettias?

No, acidity does not harm poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).Specifically, poinsettias are acid-loving plants. They prefer to grow in soils whose pH ranges from the acidic to the lower reaches of the neutral zone, from 4.5 to 6.5. In fact, a quite acidic soil pH below 4.8 protects poinsettias from the dreaded black rot (Thielaviopsis basicole) to which they are so susceptible.

What is the best temperature for storing poinsettias?

Sixty (60) degrees F/15.56 degrees C is the best temperature at which to store poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).Specifically, warmer temperatures or lower temperatures may be drying to the heat-, light- and moisture-sensitive plant. Additionally, lower temperatures raise the real possibility of rot setting in. Poinsettias do not tolerate root and stem rot.

Does apple cider vinegar hurt poinsettias?

No, apple cider vinegar does not hurt poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).Specifically, apple cider vinegar is acidic, and poinsettias are acid-loving plants. They prefer soil pH ranges between 4.5 and 6.5, that is, between the quite acidic to the lower limits of the neutral zone that so many ornamentals favor. Apple cider vinegar is quite effective at sanitizing soil, and poinsettias are sensitive to less than sanitary conditions. So poinsettias like their soil acidic and clean, and apple cider vinegar fits the bill on both counts.
