It's excellent that you want to do this. I have a friend doing the exact same thing, and she is losong. I am not a nutritionist but have studied foods and how they affect us. I lost 50+ lbs in 3 1/2 months by doing the stuff below. (And it stayed off! I weighed 170lbs to start with) This is what I advised her to do. Firstly, don't consider that you're going on a "diet", but rather, understand that from now on you are CHANGING your diet (your WAY of eating) - from an unhealthy one to a HEALTHY one. This has to be seen as a "change for life" otherwise, as soon as you've lost weight, if you go back to your old ways, the weight WILL return. It's simple, you have to adapt a new way of eating. You need to cut right down on fatty foods (fried foods, crackers, take-outs, cheese, chocolate, dairy etc) Cutting OUT is good if you can, but substituting some for their low-calorie alternatives is easier if you find it hard to go without. But still try to limit the amount of dairy and fats because this is still where most of your excess body fat would have come from. Unfortunately there are things that you should avoid. It's easy to remember, if it's fatty or very high in sugar you need to avoid it as much as you can. You are what you eat, it's true! Drink at least 8-to-10 glasses of water a day, and try and substitute snacks and the odd meal here and there with fruit and/or salad. (Watch the salad dressing though!) Water will help flush your system, and eliminate toxins and wastes which accumulate in the body. These toxins can make you feel sluggish, tired, unwell and lower your immunity. Water is VERY important. It also helps the food to go through quicker, and thus you tend to lose more calories. Try and walk every day (even if it's 5 minutes to start with because you will get better at it) Doing anything that gets you moving is going to help. Keeping active makes your metabolism work better and faster and actually causes your body to "eat up" calories much quicker. It can even keep your metabolism up for hours after you've exercised, which helps you "burn-up" the calories from the next meal you're going to eat too! Try not to eat carbohydrates after noon, as any un-used calories from carbohydrates (breads, pastas, potatoes, rice etc) will deposit themselves as fat on your body. If you eat these earlier in the day you will most likely uses those calories up through the activities that you do for the rest of the day. When I want to lose weight I just eat fresh fruit and drink water and can lose 5 kg (10 lbs) in a week, and I am about 140 lb. My friend was the same weight as you (just a few years younger) and has changed the way she eats. It's been about 6 months and she has lost about 25 lbs. She would have lost at least twice that (according to the nutritionist doctor that put her on her "diet") if she had done the walking and moderate exercise that he kept stressing to her to do, but she didn't, so I strongly recommend that you do that! You will lose it much faster if you keep active, and it gets easier every day. Good on you for wanting to help yourself - I hope you have success!
The best exercise to lose 100 pounds is cardio exercise. Of the various forms of cardio exercise, cardio walking is probably the best because it is easier on your body than running or jogging and it is sustainable long term. For more information about how to do cardio exercise properly, see the page link, further down this page, listed under Related Questions. However, before significantly changing exercise habits, it is wise to first get the blessing of your physician or medical adviser
