Neurontin, Lyrica [increases pain threshold]
Baclofen, Zanaflex [anti-spasmodics used to relieve muscle pain]
Muscle Relaxants (Soma, Skelaxin, Robaxin, Flexeril) [reduces muscle pain, may increase fibro-fog]
SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Celexa) [helpful with depression]
Tricyclics (Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline) [helpful with depression and sleep disturbance]

ANSWER:
Other pain medicines that may work for the pain are Tylonol w/ codeine, ultram, or darviset. Anything stronger tends to hurt things more than help in the long run. Also ibuprofen does not help in most cases but if you have over exerted yourself you may have inflammation and Ibuprofen helps with inflammation which may reduce some of the pain. Fibromyalgia doe snot cause inflammation but normal inflammation that many people experience will magnify pain in many fibromyalgia patience. Since Ibuprofen does not help with the initial pain most people with FM will not try it again. Or they will only try 200 or 400mg which also will not work. 800mg at times when you have done more than your body can handle.
There are two medications currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of Fibromyalgia: Lyrica and Cymbalta. Because these are the only medications that are FDA approved for Fibromyalgia, they are the only ones that can marketed for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. However, many other drugs are prescribed "off-label" for the treatment of various Fibromyalgia symptoms.
It depends what you can afford. I have a physiotherapist to put my muscles and joints back into place.
I go to acupuncture and crainiopathy as well, once a week (though after 12 sessions it goes to once a month. You should try that.
You must also reduce your stress levels, and don't do repetitive exercises for longer than 20 minutes. Also try to get yourself at least 8 hours sleep a night.
Oxycontin, Kadian, Fentynal patch are my recommendation, and I'm on Fentynal 50 micrograms, and 15 milligrams of Oxycodone. for breakthrough pain. I will suggest Kadian, or M.S Contin, and Oxycontin for breakthrough after my second appt. comes in one month. I am tired of dancing around the Oxycontin, due to the addictive scare. I've done every drug "except" these 2. It's time for my pain mgmt. doctor to take my Pharmacists suggestion. I'm sure my big talk will shrink when I'm sitting in his office...
Fibromyalgia
is classed as a disorder of pain processing due to abnormalities in how pain signals are processed in the central nervous system.
People with fibromyalgia
have typically turned to pain medicines, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and sleep medicines. In June 2007, Lyrica
(pregabalin)
became the first FDA-approved
drug for specifically treating fibromyalgia;
a year later, in June 2008, Cymbalta
(duloxetine
hydrochloride) became the second.
Both Lyrica
and Cymbalta
reduce pain and improve function in people with fibromyalgia.
While those with fibromyalgia
have been shown to experience pain differently from other people, the mechanism by which these drugs produce their effects is unknown. There is some data suggesting that these drugs affect the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals from one neuron to another. Treatment with Lyrica
or Cymbalta
reduces the level of pain experienced by some people with fibromyalgia.
Lyrica,
marketed by Pfizer Inc., was previously approved to treat seizures, as well as pain from damaged nerves that can happen in people with diabetes (diabetic peripheral neuropathy)
and in those who develop pain following the rash of shingles. Side effects of Lyrica
including sleepiness, dizziness, blurry vision, weight gain, trouble concentrating, swelling of the hands and feet, and dry mouth. Allergic reactions, although rare, can occur.
Cymbalta,
marketed by Eli Lilly and Co., was previously approved to treat depression, anxiety, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Cymbalta's
side effects include nausea, dry mouth, sleepiness, constipation, decreased appetite, and increased sweating. Like some other antidepressants, Cymbalta
may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in people who take the drug for depression. Some people with fibromyalgia
also experience depression.
Studies of both drugs showed that a substantial number of people with fibromyalgia
received good pain relief, but there were others who didn't benefit.
Lyrica
and Cymbalta
are approved for use in adults 18 years and older. The drug manufacturers have agreed to study their drugs in children with fibromyalgia
and in breastfeeding women.
There are only two medications that are FDA approved for the treatment of Fibromyalgia, however there are many others that are prescribed "off-label". The two FDA approved medications are Lyrica for the treatment of nerve pain and Cymbalta, which is an antidepressant and has also been shown to reduce Fibromyalgia pain. Other medications commonly used are Neurontin (which is a cousin of of Lyrica), other antidepressants, muscle relaxers, and other pain relievers.
There is no one best drug for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. There are many drugs used and the best drug for one person may not be the best drug for another. It is important to find a knowledgeable physician that can help you find the right drug combination to help you.
The symptom by symptom approach for treating fibromyalgia is trail and error depending on each persons pain.

Sorry to say there is not a cure for fibromyalgia the only thing that can be done is medication prescribed from a doctor to help relieve the pain. A very hard thing to deal with.
Jerking in your sleep, may be Restless Leg Syndrome. This is not uncommon with Fibromyalgia, but it may also be a side effect of some of the medications commonly prescribed for Fibromyalgia. If you are experiences jerking in your sleep, you should report this to your doctor to determine the cause.
Lyrica is being prescribed for fibromyalgia. Lyrica acts on GABA neurotransmission in the body, like Neurontin - increasing a person's threshold for pain. It should be noted that while Lyrica is being promoted for fibromyalgia, the study performed on Lyrica for the treatment of fibromyalgia did not have overwhelming positive results. The numbers were just enough that they could claim it was helpful. The company still chose to market Lyrica for the treatment of FMS because it gives them a further five years on their patent, so no other company can try and make a generic drug. Cymbalta has had more success with the treatment of fibromyalgia.
