Solar power and wind.

While there are many sources of renewable energy the best sources of renewable large scale sources remain wind energy and some forms of solar power. According to studies presented in 2009 these two sources are the most viable for large scale usage. While the initial installation costs for these energies remaining higher than more traditional sources (coal, fossil fuels, etc.) the costs of the power itself is significantly lower.

Hydroelectric

There may be some debate as to what is meant by "best". All forms of energy generation will create some form of waste (or pollution). Solar causes the pollution in it's creation and short life span (under thirty years). Wind kills birds and is ineffective when there is minimal wind.

The one renewable source we have that offers us power similar to that found from fossil fuel plants though is hydro. Water flows all the time, not on the whim of weather. Thus, we can derive power from hydro on our schedule and not that of the weather, as solar and wind do. Additionally, Hydroelectric is a proven technology with a positive return on investment.

That's a good question. Unfortunatley the answer is a mix of the lot. If you have a waterfall handy then hydro-electric is your best bet, but suburbs don't lend themselvs to hydro-dams. Other than this the main forms of renewable energy are wind and solar, which can be harnessed in paralell, however generally weather conditions which cause strong winds are the same conditions whcih push clouds around, so when one generator is running at peak efficiancy the other will be less effective. efficiancy wise wind and hydro electric have less waste due to the use of Mechanical engines (~80% of input energy) compaired to photovoltaic (~5-15%) but even here in Britain Watt for Watt solar panels tend to have higher output.

If you are considering going green for your energy generation then good for you. I know their is a house in London somewhare which runs entierly off renewable energy [http://news.bbc.co.UK/1/hi/sci/tech/354646.stm](the local energy service buy any excess generated to offset against costs when at a deposite, so theirs even money in it), and a friend of mine has a windmill fitted to his roof which has reduced his energy bill by approx 35% (makes a lovely whirring noise in the morning), so the concept of renewable energy as a whole is entirely fiesable in the 21st century, but chooseing a single scource and calling it viable is simply putting all of your eggs in one basket.

-As a replacement for petro, Hydrogen is the way. It's plentiful, and the only product when it's burned is water. There are some issues that still need to be resolved before it can be considered viable and marketable. Extracting hydrogen from water is energy taxing and there are storage problems. There have been some recent advances towards the problem of its storage with the development of some metal-organic frameworks. It will take some time to work everything out, but clearly it's the best candidate.

Hydroelectric power, because it is inexpensive and does not create pollution.

Solar power. Not all communities have enough flowing water for hydroelectric power.
