It depends on what they are used for. A tracking dog - bloodhound Detection dog - Labrador patrol (bite dog) - Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, or German Shepherd Usually, it's not a particular breed, but bloodlines of a breed that are the best. Police dogs are usually bred specifically for the type of work that they will be performing. It's similar to breeding show winning dogs. You would use the best of the best for breeding, then take the ones from the litter that show the most promise, and start training from there.

Other contributors have said:

Usually, German Shepherds. They are very good attack dogs. Hope this helps!
Well there isn't a specific breed policemen like, but most police dogs are German shepherds or Labradors.
German shepards

Another popular kind is the Belgian Malinois. They look like German Shepherds but are a little smaller and faster. And not quite as handsome imho.
Police use different breeds, depending on what they'll be using the dog for (tracking, scents, ect). While the most common is the German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois', and Blood Hounds are also used. Even the Beagle is sometimes used for drug detection. Hope this helps.
German shepherds are the most common but some use other breeds like labs or mixed breeds.
The most commonly used police dog is the Belgian Malinois (90% of the world's military and police units uses them).

The next most popular dog used (9% of all military/police units use them), is the working-line German Shepherd (which is completely different from the normal or "show-line" German shepherd).

The third most used police dog is the Dutch Shepherd, which is pretty much a Belgian Malinois with a brindle coat.
Fierce or brave type of dog are used police dog

Although many breeds of dog are used in police work, German Shepherds are the most common.
Many breeds of dog are used by police forces, for different tasks like attacking or protecting the officer, sniffing out bombs or drugs, tracking, etc. Some of the most common are the German Shepard and the Belgian Shepard Dog (Malinois)
While there are several breeds of dog that can be used, many use breeds like the German Shepherd. Dogs breeds that are used for herding are commonly used as police dogs.
The breeds commonly preferred for use in the police force are the German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) and the Belgian Malinois. Both breeds are highly intelligent and obedient, which makes them perfect for police work. Although the police force have experimented with other breeds such as the Rottweiler and Dobermann, they continue to look to Belgian and German Shepherd Dogs for use in the police force. However, although it is now unfortunately banned in most countries, the American Pit Bull Terrier is known to be one of the best police force and war breeds of all time. The breed is loyal, affectionate, easily trainable, has immense power and its unbeatable courage meant that it would gladly die protecting its handler. However, due to public concern and discriminative breed bans, the American Pit Bull Terrier is now rarely used in the police force.
The most common breed of dogs that come to mind when people mention "Police Dogs" are; German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds. They are your usual "patrol" dogs, but other breeds are utiized, and there are also many specialized tasks performed by breeds with special abilities (i.e.- Bloodhounds for tracking, hounds and spaniels for drug and explosives seeking, etc).
Well The Most Common One Is German Shephard but there are more like Labs,Belgian Malinois
Normally, the police use rottweilers and German shepherds for crimes, and use smaller dogs like cavaliers for drug detecting.

Added: The type of dog does not necessarily change with the type of work the dog is trained to do. For example: many dogs are dual trained to detect narcotics as well as patrol work. Being involved with law enforcement k-9 teams for over 10 years I would say the most frequently used dog for patrol work would be German Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois, (which is my preferred bread). K-9 Patrol work consists of tracking, trailing, handler protection, apprehensions (bite work), and maybe even article searches (finding handguns or weapons, etc).

It is my experience that Rottweiler's are not as agile, intelligent, or motivated as the above breads. Rottweilers have their place as working dogs, in my opinion they do not make good police dogs.

Many dogs used for detection can be any of the hunting breads, Labradors, Retrievers, etc. As well as mutts or dogs of mixed breads. Detection dogs only need to have the appropriate temperament to hunt and retrieve, or what we call play drive. Dogs trained in Patrol work need to have courage, stable predictable emotions, and an even temperament because they could be in a position where a suspect will try to hurt them or scare them.
The term 'police dog' is usually applied to the German Shepherd breed. However, the dogs used by police forces today can be any of a hundred breeds; the breed is chosen for an ability necessary to the task that will be performed by the dog.

The german shepherd and the doberman are the two most common breeds used as police dogs. They are both very intelligent, alert, and obedient. Their nose senses are very strong.

Some other breeds that are used for police work are the Giant Schnauzer, the Belgian Malinois, and the Belgian Tervuren. I understand that Beagles are sometimes used for detection, and Bloodhounds can be used for S&R.
