There are many different answers for this as the circumstances require different paints. In a high moisture area such as a bathroom or kitchen area, a semi gloss is preferred. In a high traffic area, a flat paint is normally used for easier cleanup. Trim, handrails and crown molding are normally painted in a high gloss, for effect.

If you have a bad drywall finish, you need to use a low sheen paint. the flatter the paint, the more it will hide inperfections in your drywall job. However..flat paint has a low washability problem. If you have little kids that leave finger prints all over trim, doors and such, use a paint that has more sheen. a good quality paint is a must. Dont get the cheap stuff as badly as you may want it. Usually doors and trim are semi -gloss. It has a good enamel content and is very washable. Walls, A satin is usually nice, not too much sheen. Or even a eggshell. The sheen levels are these. Flat, eggshell, satin, semigloss, gloss. Remember to clean and prep. wash down anything that may be greasy.

Interior latex or acrylic is best from both the cost and odour perspective.
