The Udy coat of arms, although I can't find an image of it, is of Irish origin. I have roots on my mother's mom's side of the Udy family. Unsure of where they originated in Ireland, there are traces of the Udy's found in Cornwall, England which is the very southern tip of England. For those who don't know, Cornwall is actually considered a "Celtic Nation" because of it's large roots of Irish decedants who migrated there during 13-18th centuries. The reason for this migration was because of the huge tin deposits in Cornwall during this time. The tin mining industry was so big in Cornwall, many of the workers took the last name "Tinney" or "Tenney" to express their newly aquired trade. Tinney is actually my grandmother's maiden name.
Although we are all aware of the Potatoe Famine in Ireland during the 1820s-40s, there was actually a few less severe potatoe famines much earlier than this that lead to families leaving Ireland to find work in other parts of the UK, such as Cornwall.
Irish names and people dominated Cornwall, and still do, which is why if you have family in/from Cornwall, England there is a very good chance they orginated from Ireland. There are some Welsh decendants who occupied areas of Cornwall as well, but not as much as the Irish.
I hope this helps...
