In 711-13 Arabs and other North African Muslims conquered the Iberian Peninsula, which was then the Kingdom of the Visigoths, who were Christian at the time. The reconquista refers to the reconquest of the region by Christians.
Following the invasion of Spain by the Moors in 711, the Visigoths retreated to a small area of Northern Spain at the Western edge of the Pyrenees. The semi-mythical kingdom of Asturias was never conquered by the Muslims, though they reached as far north as Poitiers in Central France before being turned back by the Holy Roman Empire.

The Reconquista (reconquest) began in 722 with the Battle of Covadonga, but the Moors continued to dominate Spain for many Centuries thereafter. The various Muslim and Christian Kingdoms often swapped sides for political or financial gain, but gradually the Christians regained their lost territories and by 1490 all but a small area around Granada had been retaken by the Christian Armies. In 1492, Granada itself fell to an army under Ferdinand & Isabella and the reconquest was complete. Boabdil, the last King of Granada was exiled and died in North Africa in 1527.

From a Christian point of view, the Reconquista was considered as a crusade and indeed Crusades to assist the Spanish were called in 1147, 1193, 1197, 1210, 1212, 1221 and 1229 by the papacy.

The Spainish Reconquista was the reconquering of the Spainish lands to Catholic hands.
La Reconquista was the Christian Spanish recovery of Spain from Islam (the Moors) after 700 years of occupation. It was achieved by a series of military victories under los Reyes Catolicos, Ferdinand and Isabella, and completed by 1492, the year, coincidentally and helpfully, of Columbus' discovery of The New World.
