There are many allotropes of carbon, some are:

  • Amorphous Carbon (No real structure to speak of)
  • Diamond (Tetrahedral Crystalline Structure)
  • Graphite (Hexagonal 'Graphene' Sheets)
  • C-nanotubes (Cylindrical Graphene)
  • Buckyballs (Spherical Graphene)

Note that buckyballs and carbon nanotubes are templates of the 'fullerene family' of carbon allotropes, of which there are many.

Another note: Soot is not an allotrope of carbon, it is a collection of particles left from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is not an allotrope since it contains oxygen.

There are three allotropes of carbon: diamond, graphite, and fullerene. They differ in the way the carbon atoms are bonded to each other, and therefore have very different chemical and physical properties. Coal is formed when the bonding pattern in a sample of carbon is irregular and mixed.

Carbon exists in many allotropes, the most common of which are diamond and graphite. Others include amorphous carbon, fullerenes and carbon nanofoam.

In diamond, carbon atoms are connected in a lattice of six-membered rings, so that each atom is bonded to four others, in a tetrahedron. This forms a very stable network of covalent bonds, which makes diamond very strong and hard.

Graphite is composed of layers of carbon atoms, where each layer is a hexagonal crystal lattice. These sheets are only weakly bonded to each other, making graphite soft, as the layers slide across each other. The pi bonds in graphite also make it an electrical conductor.

An allotrope is a structural form of an element which has a number of structural forms (which exhibits allotropy). For example carbon has two well known allotropes, graphite a grey-black solid which conducts electricity and has uses as a lubricant; diamond a clear, non-conducting extremely hard substance.
