Syncopation is when a change of accent occurs in music, such as the main beat falling on the off-beat, rather than at the beginning of a bar of music. The strong beat falls on an off-beat, rather than on the first (or third) beat of the bar. Syncopation is not limited to jazz, as it is found in all forms of music.

Due to the subjective nature of music itself, it would be remiss to assume that syncopation is necessary to the genre of jazz. However, it did push the boundaries of music and thus became a staple of Jazz Music. One of the reasons for this was because of what was going on in orchestral (or "classical") music 50 years or so before.

Orchestral music composers felt they were in a rut and needed to break out of what was referred to as "the tyranny of the bar line," a phrase that simply meant they were sick of straight duple or triple meter rhythm. They wanted something more and started composing with irregular rhythmic patterns and even using notes that slurred across the bar line so it didn't sound as symmetrical as previous periods.

Jazz behaved a lot the same way. Ever searching for new and innovative ways to express a musical idea, syncopation became an important method that enables composers to utilize exotic and rather interesting beats, which in turn allows for a melody line to be more expressive.

Syncopation is caused by the irregular beat. It gives you the goosebumps, chills, or emotions.
