It could refer to some kind of size modification with cut-away or stripped down parts, said of some firearms with a collapsible or fold-away ( Skeleton) shoulder stock which is hollow to keep the weight down, yet allow support for the weapon, as a shoulder stock is supposed to do. could also refer to cut-away or phantom drawings of, say buildings, automobile transmissions, etce, generally called Cut-aways.
