Semen is sperm mixed with other secretions of the male reproductive system. Sperm is formed in the seminiferous tubules of the male testis. As Sperm leaves the body it passes through the prostate gland. The sperm is mixed with a milky white substance that is used to neutralize the acidity of the vagina allowing protection for the sperm. Then this mixture passes through the seminal vesicles where it is then mixed with fructose to provide energy for the sperm. Right before the sperm mixture is ejaculated out of the male penis, the bulbourethral glands send out a "pre-ejaculation" that neutralizes traces of acidic urine in the male urethra.

All of that mixed together is known as semen.

Semen is formed in the seminal vescicles by the mixture of secretions of sex glands, namely, seminiferous tubules, seminal vescicles, the prostate, and the bulbourethral glands. In an adult male semen consists of complex range of organic and inorganic constituents along with spermatozoa. Alkaline semen is formed from basic amines such as putrescine, spermine, spermidine and cadaverine that give the peculiar fishy smell and flavor to semen. Spermatozoa (sperms) are 2 to 5%, whereas 65-75% semen is formed from amino acids, citrate, enzymes, flavins, fructose, phosphorylcholine, prostaglandins, proteins, and vitamin C. 25-30% of semen is formed from the secretions of prostate, consisting of acid phosphatase, citric acid, fibrinolysin, prostate specific antigen, proteolytic enzymes, and zinc. Galactose and mucous comes from the bulbourethral glands.
