The body's normal production of chemicals in the brain, which ordinarily produce feelings of pleasure, are suppressed, sending the brain into a state of depression. It physically demands more of the drug to go back to "normal'' and feel good again. This pleasure/tension cycle leads to physical loss of control over the use of alcohol and other drugs - and results in addiction.
