Both tarantism and lycanthropy are illnesses developed after being bitten by an animal; the former is a real condition and the latter is a mythical one. Tarantism is madness and hysterics that are thought to be caused by a spider bite, possibly from a tarantula. Lycanthropy is the condition of being a werewolf, which is the result of being bitten by a werewolf.
