Other words are crap-box or crapper, immortalising Thomas Crapper a Yorkshire plumber who moved to London and founded the Sanitary-ware company which bore his name and popularised the use of water closets, which also bore his name. Crapper developed the ballcock auto-fill system and promoted the bathroom fittings showroom. He is erroneously credited with the invention of the WC/flushing toilet but that honour went to John Harington in 1596.
