An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the baby starts to develop outside the womb (uterus). The most common site for an ectopic pregnancy is within one of the tubes through which the egg passes from the ovary to the uterus (fallopian tube). However, in rare cases, ectopic pregnancies can occur in the ovary, stomach area, or cervix.

An ectopic pregnancy is usually caused by a condition that blocks or slows the movement of a fertilized egg through the fallopian tube to the uterus. This may be caused by a physical blockage in the tube.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Pain in the lower abdomen, and inflammation
  • Pain while urinating
  • Pain while having a bowel movement
  • External bleeding is due to the falling progesterone levels.

Ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilised egg implants itself within one of the fallopian tubes rather than within the uterus, as the embryo grows it outgrows the small space of the fallopian tube and if not caught soon enough this can prove fatal.

AnswerAn ectopic pregnancy is when your fertilized egg does not release entirely into the uterus and your pregnancy develops inside your falopian tube.

Ectopic pregnancy happens when the sperm has fertilized the egg and the resulting embryo develops inside the fallopian tube. This happens in the first trimester and usually but NOT alwaysthe growing embryo, confined within the fallopian tube, produces pressure on nerves resulting in sharp abdominal pains or cramps.

Always investigate unusual cramping, out of cycle uterine bleeding or continuous pain. You may be (like me) miraculously free of any pain with an ectopic pregnancy. Continuous bleeding and extreme fatigue were my only symptoms during my entire 6 week ectopic ordeal.

REFUSE to accept advice from any medical professional who tells you to come back for an examination "when the bleeding stops".

In 1987, I changed doctors three times till I was able to secure provable medical results that were not simply the opinion of my overworked doctor. After 6 interminable weeks of juggling doctors, I finally saw a specialist who took less than 72 hours to determine that (a) I was indeed pregnant and (b) the pregnancy was non-viable and most likely ectopic (c)I needed immediate surgery, which was completed within 24 hours of the final result.

Had I followed my original family doctor's orders, I'd be dead now; my loving husband would be widower and our (then) small son would have grown up without the guidance and love of his Mother.

INSIST on seeing a specialist if your doctor does not have answers for you: Your life and the welfare of your family may be at stake. Ectopic pregnancy and a doctor's lack of knowledge can kill you. If you suspect you are having an ectopic pregnancy, you owe it to your family's future to be pro-active and educate yourself.

ECTOPIC PREGNANCY

An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy which is not where it should be, it may be in the fallopian tubes, which is the most common ectopic pregnancy, but it could be in the cervix or very rarely outside the uterus, or as in my case, implanted in the caesarean section scar of the uterus. Symptoms can be spotting, pain in either side of the abdomen, or absence of an embryo in your ultrasound scan. Treatment can be either surgery or an injection of a chemotherapy drug called methotrexate which stops the pregnancy in its tracks ie: prevents the cells from developing further.
An ectopic pregnancy is where the fertilised egg plants itself anywhere but inside the uterus/womb, which means it could be in the fallopian tube, cervix etc. It is not a viable pregnancy.

In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants in a location outside the uterus and tries to develop there. The word ectopic means "in an abnormal place or position." The most common site is the fallopian tube, the tube that normally carries eggs from the ovary to the uterus. However, ectopic pregnancy can also occur in the ovary, the abdomen, and the cervical canal (the opening from the uterus to the vaginal canal). The phrases tubal pregnancy, ovarian pregnancy, cervical pregnancy, and abdominal pregnancy refer to the specific area of an ectopic pregnancy. In an ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. The egg settles in the fallopian tubes in more than 95% of ectopic pregnancies. This is why ectopic pregnancies are commonly called "tubal pregnancies." The egg can also implant in the ovary, abdomen, or the cervix

As none of these areas has as much space or tissue as a uterus for a pregnancy to develop, it is not enough space for a baby to grow. As the fetus grows, it will eventually burst the organ that contains it. This can cause severe bleeding and endanger the mother's life. This is why most ectopic pregnancys do not result in a live birth :)

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fetus implants somewhere other than the uterine lining. Most of them occur in the fallopian tubes, also known as a tubal pregnancy.

Can bad sperm cause ectopic pregnancy?

No, the sperms are not to blame. 1/50 of all pregnancies is a ectopic one and the risk is increased once you've had one. Reasons for ectopic and more you can read in the link below.

When sperm and egg join the the Fallopian tube?

This is the start of an ectopic pregnancy, that is, one that begins anywhere in the body except the uterus. When an embryo starts to grow in the fallopian tube, it quickly runs out of room to expand. At that point, the tube is in danger of rupturing and the mother's life is at risk. Surgery is necessary to prevent an ectopic pregancy from becoming fatal; such a pregancy can never be brought to term.

What are the signs of a ecotopic pregancy?

An ectopic pregnancy may seem like a normal pregnancy at first. You'll have a positive pregnancy test. Early signs and symptoms may be the same as those of any pregnancy — a missed period, breast tenderness, nausea and fatigue. But an ectopic pregnancy can't continue as normal. The first warning signs of an ectopic pregnancy often include: Light vaginal bleeding Lower abdominal pain Cramping on one side of the pelvis If the fallopian tube ruptures, symptoms may include: Sharp, stabbing pain in the pelvis, abdomen or even the shoulder and neck Dizziness Lightheadedness If you experience any signs or symptoms of ectopic pregnancy, seek emergency care.
