Both platforms are ASCII platforms, but the difference is the line termination character. In Windows, there is a two character sequence to denote the end of the line (CR/LF sequence, 0D0A)

For Unix, the line termination character is the newline character (0A), to denote the end of the text line.

The tar format for retrieving drivers is used in what windows 2000 windows xp unix netware?

tar extension can more or less be compared to zip: a tarball (this is the name of a "tar extension'ed file") is used to group file (and eventually folders of files). Although tarballs are mostly used in Unix flavors, programs such as WinRar for Windows can extract files from them. In short, such drivers may work for both Windows and/or Unix flavors.
