Isn't it a substance that is used as a drying agent? Something like Silica Gel that you often find in a new pair of shoes.

Can you kill a toad by salt?

Yes, toads can be killed by salt. Salt dehydrates the amphibians in question by desiccating their cells. Toads do not recover from such disruptions to their sensitively balanced interior fluids and organs.

How do you separate mono-methyl hydroquinone ether from methyl methacrylate?

Monomeric methyl methacrylate can be freed of hydroquinone inhibitor by shaking with 5 N sodium hydroxide and desiccating with 8-mesh calcium chloride.

Can baking soda be used in the mummification process?

Yes. "Natron, a disinfectant and desiccating agent, was the main ingredient used in the mummification process. A compound of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate(salt and baking soda), natron essentially dried out the corpse."

How is calcium chloride bad for the environment?

Calcium chloride can act as an irritant by desiccating moist skin. Solid calcium chloride dissolves exothermically, and burns can result in the mouth and esophagus if it is ingested. Ingestion of concentrated solutions or solid products may cause gastrointestinal irritation or ulceration

Who discovered rabies and when?

Pasteur produced the first vaccine for rabies by growing the virus in rabbits, and then weakening it by drying the affected nerve tissue. The rabies vaccine was initially created by Emile Roux, a French doctor and a colleague of Pasteur who had been working with a killed vaccine produced by desiccating the spinal cords of infected rabbits.

What is so special about swimming in the Dead Sea that cures many skin ailments?

Compared to the Pacific or Atlantic, The Dead Sea's salinity is so high it's almost off the charts. The reason that the sea is dead is -- too much salt. Immersion in this is like immersion in a large toxic bath that will kill what's on you but -- not you. If the direct reaction of the concentrated sodium isn't enough, another property of sodium is that it is hygroscopic and so absorbs water from organisms, thus desiccating them and killing them. While this isn't the answer to every human malady, it does do a lot more than you'd expect! And -- it even feels good.

What happens if you mix sulfuric acid to sugar?

Sugar is a carbohydrate ... a molecule with an empirical formula of the form Cx(H2O)y. Sulfuric acid is a strong desiccating agent; it 'pulls' water out of the sugar, leaving behind just the carbon.

What is the difference between a windbreak and a shelterbelt?

WIND BREAKS. These are such structures which break the wind flow and reduce the wind speed.- the effect of wind breaks serve to enhance the crop and and animal production by protecting livestock and crops from harsh conditions.- check soil erosion along with wind erosion.-protect livestock from hot and cold winds, and also provide them habitat.-generally tall and comparetively dense foliage trees and shrubs are preferred.SHELTER BELTS.These are belts/blocks consisting of several rows of trees established at right angle to prevailing winds.-generally deflect air currents; reduce the velocity of prevailing winds and protect the leeward areas from the desiccating effects of hot winds.-the ratio of height and width should be roughly 1:10.-generally these have typical triangular shape.

Is evolution of gas upon boiling water with magnesium strips a chemical change?

A chemical change is a change in which molecular composition of taken reactants changes. If water decomposes to hydrogen and oxygen then it is a chemical change while freezing or boiling of water is a physical change as it's composition remains same. Now if we take the case of boiling water with magnesium strips a colorless and odorless gas is evolved which can be collected using suitable arrangements. The colorless gas can be only water vapor or hydrogen( from decomposition of water ) or it can be a mixture of both of them. If we remove the water vapor using desiccating agent from the collected gas and them test the gas for combustion we will find that it is a supporter of combustion. This shows that gas is not water vapor but hydrogen. But hydrogen was not taken initially, hence we conclude that hydrogen was produced due to decomposition of water. Since the composition has changed so it is concluded that a chemical change has occurred. Here is the chemical equation :Mg + 2H2O --> Mg(OH)2 + H2
