it is used in the production of cocaine an illicit drug. It is ground up, mixed with water and then the paste laid out on a tray to dry in the sun. It then turns into a hard powdery substance (cocaine) which is then ground into a powder. It originally grew in Mexico and south America

∙ 14y agoCocaine has a number of legitimate medical uses. It is used as a topical anesthetic for eye and ear surgery. It is also used in a concoction called Brompton's Cocktail. Brompton's Cocktail is a mixture of morphine, cocaine, vodka, and cherry syrup. It is given to cancer patients. The morphine is to kill the pain, while the cocaine is to counteract the sleepiness caused by the morphine. The alcohol and cherry syrup are there just to make people feel better about what they are taking. Many people have unreasonable prejudices against morphine and cocaine, so the inclusion of the alcohol lets them feel as if they are just having an ordinary cocktail. Interestingly, alcohol kills at least 25 times as many people as all the people killed by morphine and cocaine combined, and alcohol is more addictive than cocaine, so their prejudice is a bit misplaced.

∙ 14y agoCocaine is a derivative of the South American coca plant. Cocaine's most common form is a fine white powder, which is inhaled through an addicts nose. It is commonly used as a stimulant and an appetite suppressant.
Coca has been used by the native people of South America for hundreds of years for it's anesthetic qualities. When the Spanish conquered South America in the 1500's, the plant was discovered to have stimulating effects, which gave people more strength and energy, and is was legalized as a taxable commodity.
In 1855 German chemist Friedrich Gaedcke isolated the specific property of the coca plant that gave off the stimulating effects, the alkaloid Cocaine. He named the alkaloid erythroxyline. Gaedche's work was followed by several more scientists, who brought entire ships of coca to Europe, in order to experiment with the cocaine and find a more efficient way to isolate it.
The Medical society caught onto the plant's benefits and after it was able to be mass produced, cocaine was put on the market for everyday people to legally buy for everyday use. It was packaged as a cure all remedy and pain reliever. Cocaine was even the key ingredient in the original recipe for Coca-Cola, which in 1886 was used to cure stomach ailments.
By the turn of the twentieth century, the addictive qualities of cocaine had become clear to mainstream society, and it was made illegal to purchase or produce. The US didn't acknowledge cocaine as a controlled substance until 1970, and it's use was rarely prosecuted. There is some speculation that the prohibition was due in part to racial viewpoint toward African Americans, and the fact that cocaine made them (any man) uncontrollable to police.
Cocaine became very popular in 1980's and is know as the drug of the'80's. Today cocaine takes on the form of crack or rock cocaine or freebase cocaine. It is derived from cocaine, but it is hardened, or freebased, by with household chemicals. By freebasing the cocaine, the dealer increases the amount they have and therefore can sell it at a cheaper price, than the uncut cocaine. Crack cocaine is smoked, usually through a glass pipe, called a crack pipe.
