Climate change refers to the way the world's climate changes over time. In the past the climate has changed, but that change has been very slow, taking many thousands of years. When we talk about climate change now, we usually mean the very sudden warming of the earth, particularly over the last one hundred years. This is caused by the enhanced greenhouse effect, from our burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), and deforestation.
Burning of coal, oil and natural gas in industry, transport and the generation of electricity releases carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, which traps heat in the atmosphere.
Deforestation destroys the great forests of the world that take carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the air and store the carbon in the wood and leaves.
