Yet, Jesus said: "He that conducts himself as a lesser one among all of you is the one that is great." (Luke 9:48) In harmony with that spirit of humility, he told his followers not to adopt religious titles.-Matthew 23:8-12.

Clergy are members of the clerical state, it is from the Latin clericus which refers to lot or portion, in the sense that the clergy's portion is the Lord. Although they may be in positions of authority, very few are, and the clerical state is one of service, they represent Our Blessed Lord in service to the faithful. The state was formed by Our Blessed Lord when He ordained the Apostles as the first Bishops. The religious clergy are ordained members of religious Orders who have been ordained to the diaconate, priesthood, or bishopric. Secular clergy are all the rest who belong to their bishop.
