Different people, different religions and cultures call breaking out of the cycle of reincarnation by different names. The ancient Hindus called it Mukti and Moksha, then the Hindu prince Siddhartha Gautama went in quest and he modified the belief and called it Nirvana, in the Buddhist manner. In the western world, people call it Enlightenment, which leads to Salvation. It doesn't matter what we call it, but we must understand what it is. Breaking out of the cycle of reincarnation is realizing that the body dies, everybody will die, but the one who was alive, the ME, the Mind and the Ego is reborn based on its actions or Karma. The cycle goes on and on till we realize we are not even the ME, the Mind and the Ego, we are the Divine Soul. Then we have no Karma and we are liberated and united with the Divine - this ends the cycle.

In one sense you could say "Nothing." in another "Everything."

Once out of the cycle of birth, death, and re-birth there is a loss of awareness of self apart from everything else.

Unless of course the Buddhist is a follower of the Mahayana teachings when he dies after becoming enlightened. In that case, instead of escaping the cycle of re-birth, he may choose to return to Earth to help enlighten others.

Breaking out of the cycle of reincarnation of death and rebirth is known by different terms. The Buddhists call it Nirvana, but it came out of the Hindu term of Moksha or Mukti. In the western world, it is referred to as Salvation, that comes from Enlightenment, that comes from the realization of the Truth. What is breaking out of the cycle of reincarnation? It is the realization that we are not the body, because the body dies and returns to ashes. We are not even the mind and ego that carries its Karma and is reincarnated, we are the Divine Soul, the life that leaves at death, the Spirit, the Atman, the consciousness. This realization that we are the Divine Soul liberates us from the cycle of reincarnation as we are united with the Divine.

What is Buddhist Awakening?

Buddhist Awakening is another name for Enlightenment. This is a state of complete peace and realisation. All Buddhists seek to reach this as it will enable them to reach Nirvana (the Buddhist equivalent of heaven). This would end the constant cycle of reincarnation.
