In 1875, the Greenback Party was organized at a convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The difficult economic times was the reason for the party formation. They advocated the issuing of paper money not backed by gold. The party ran unsuccessful candidates in the Presidential race in 1876, 1880, and 1884, Economic conditions improved and the party faded away.

The republican part int he 1800's was in competition with the democratic party. This was to gain power and control.
