Jihad, that means in English striving or struggleing, is of two types:

  • self Jihad (or oneself struggle and is called the greatest or greater Jihad), and
  • military Jihad (or struggle with others and is called the smallest or lesser Jihad)

Regarding lesser (or Military ) Jihad, it is licit only in two cases:

  • First: to defend home land and home people against any invaders.
  • Second: to provide help and support to other people who are oppressed and unable to practice their own will and freedom of choice.

Self Jihad is that any Muslim should practice Jihad or self struggle to avoid doing wrong deeds and/or committing sins that are forbidden by Islam and by his community. It is also doing good things that Allah wants you to do, such as following the morals of Quran and prophet Muhammad (PBUH), reciting the Quran, helping the poor, striving to fulfil your family requirements, learning and studying useful sciences and arts, etc.

In both cases, Muslims (as in all other faiths) are commanded, by their religion, to be fair and just. They are forbidden; by Quran and prophet Muhammad teachings; to kill a woman, child, or an old man or any civilian. They are commanded not to be excessive in using force and not to terrify civilians. They are forbidden from spoiling the nature, cutting a tree, or polluting/poisoning air or water.

Answer 1

Examples of lesser jihad are defending your religion, home, land, wife, and children against any attack. Refer to related question below.

Answer 2

The term "lesser jihad" refers to the jihad that Westerners are more familiar with: a holy war. The lesser jihad is an active military conflict waged by Muslims on Non-Muslims or other Muslims in order to defend the faith (although historically this has included offensive warfare), protection of Islamic countries from foreign invaders (although, again, historically this has included offensive warfare), and other forms of military actions.

Muslims worldwide do not agree on what would qualify for a lesser jihad or would be too offensive (vs. defensive) to qualify. There is a serious debate in the Islamic community if, for example, the offensive warfare promulgated by ISIL is an acceptable form of jihad or not. Those who argue that it is say that they are defending Muslims from autocratic regimes and restoring Islamic Law. Those who argue against it cite the barbarity used by ISIL and its offensive character in overrunning major cities and displacing Non-Muslim populations. The most common "agreed-upon" lesser jihad in the Islamic community is the Mecca-Medinan War that occurred throughout the 620s C.E. in Saudi Arabia between the Pagan Meccans who were attempting to invade Islamic Medina and the Medinans resisted.

The jihad that involves internal struggle and personal growth in faith is the "greater jihad".

Jihad is always good. It is an Arabic word that means struggle. Struggle for a cause or a goal. Every human is practicing Jihad by one way or another. The more is noble the cause or the goal the more noble is Jihad. Jihad has nothing to do with terrorism or killing innocents.

Jihad is classified under two categories:

  • The smallest jihad (or the Minor Jihad or military jihad), and

  • The greatest (or major jihad or self jihad.

Regarding the smallest jihad (or military jihad), you are licit to practice it only in two cases:

  • First: to defend religion, home, land, and people against any invaders and attackers.

  • Second: to provide help and support to other people who are oppressed and unable to practice their own will and freedom of choice.

In both cases of the smallest (or the military) jihad, Muslims are commanded, by Quran and prophet teachings, to be fair and just. You should not kill an innocent, a woman, a child, an old man, or any civilian. You are commanded not to be excessive in using force and not to terrify civilians.

Regarding the greatest jihad (or major jihad or self jihad), you must always practice it (and strive) to:

  • forbid yourself from any action against God commands or against His prophet (PBUH) teachings as what to do and what not to do

  • to do good for yourself, your family, your community, mankind , and nature.

An example of the Greater Jihad, which is the "good one" in most people's eyes, would be to fight for Human Rights and Equality for all citizens, especially in countries that have clear and pervasive discrimination or ongoing genocide.

Jihad is a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. There are two general ways to do this, the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. The Greater Jihad is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously; this kind of jihad should be entirely peaceful.

The LESSER JIHAD refers to conflicts and confrontations between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims, which often erupt in war, but can also be performed through non-violent protests, debate, and advocacy. It is the Lesser Jihad which is often cast as a Holy War.
