When a man loves a woman he asks her to marry him. The engagement ring is a symbol of his commitment and a pledge of his love.
Additional Notes:
An engagement ring is a symbol of commitment for a future marriage with the person it was given to. Love is hopefully the reason for the marriage, but not always. Most engagement rings are given to a woman from a man, but "man-gagement" rings are becoming increasingly popular so the men can show their commitment too.
Most engagement rings are made out of yellow gold, white gold or platinum. Originally, engagement rings were a solid band without any gemstones but today most engagement rings include a diamond, at least in North America. In other parts of the world, notably Europe, an engagement ring often includes sapphires or other gemstones.
Engagement rings can come as part of a bridal set with a matching wedding band (to be worn after the marriage) or without the wedding band.
An engagement ring is traditionally given from a man to a woman, to show his intention to marry her. Traditionally the man will kneel down on one knee, and present her with a ring and ask "will you marry me?"
Engagement rings are made of metal, and usually have a clear diamond or many diamonds in it. Traditional metals that are used are yellow gold, white gold or platinum.

Yes it does matter where you wear your engagment ring. It should only be worn on the ring finger.
No a promise ring is usually somthing a guy gives his girlfriend when they are either underage so they cant get married yet or you guys havent been together long enough too get married. and anyways an engagment ring doesnt mean that you guys will stay together forever it means you guys plan too get married. for me a promise ring means more then an engagment ring because lets face it not all mariages work out and an engagment ring means he truly wants too stay with you forever!
Ring finger on the left hand. Wedding band goes on first, Engagment ring goes on second.

Gold and silver usually should be worn seperately unless the pieces are relatively small.
