The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle that appears in all eukaryotic cells, usually surrounding the nucleus. The ER is made of a series of membranes that extend throughout the jelly-like cytoplasm and kind of form a maze. The ER's main function is to manufacture and transport materials to other places.

The ER has two halves: rough ER and smooth ER. Rough ER is spotted with ribosomes (organelles made of RNA and proteins that produce more proteins from other RNA), while smooth ER contain no ribosomes. Instead, smooth ER makes lipids and does other things, like decomposing drugs and alcohol.

A protein made in a ribosome on rough ER enters the lumen of the ER, then the protein can be modified by attaching to sugar chains, which can help fold or stabilize the protein.

AnswerEndoplasmic Reticulum is ER for short. It is the organelle in which components of the cell membrane are assembled and some proteins are packaged to be sent to the Golgi Apparatus. There are two parts of the E.R., the Smooth E.R. and the Rough E.R. The Smooth E.R. produces lipids and the Rough E.R. is covered in ribosomes that produce protein. In short, it's basically the superhighway of the cell. It makes rapid transport through the cytoplasm possible, and it also happens to produce many molecules vital to the cell. Without the endoplasmic reticulum our cells would be basically all dead.
The type of "cellular road" in cells. "Rough ER" has ribosomes (another cell part) on it, while "Smooth ER" doesn't have ribosomes.
Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of tubules, vesicles and sacs that are interconnected. They may serve specialized functions in the cell including protein synthesis, sequestration of calcium, production of steroids, storage and production of glycogen, and insertion of membrane proteins.

here are several definitions i found on dictionary.com

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This

endoplasmic reticulum-noun Cell Biology. a network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm of the cell, occurring either with a smooth surface (smooth endoplasmic reticulum) or studded with ribosomes (rough endoplasmic reticulum), involved in the transport of materials.

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This endoplasmic reticulum

n. A membrane network within the cytoplasm of cells involved in the synthesis, modification, and transport of cellular materials.

endoplasmic reticulum (ěn'də-plāz'mĭk) Pronunciation Key

An organelle consisting of a network of membranes within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells that is important in protein synthesis and folding and is involved in the transport of cellular materials. The endoplasmic reticulum can be continuous in places with the membrane of the cell nucleus. The function of the endoplasmic reticulum can vary greatly with cell type, and even within the same cell it can have different functions depending on whether it is rough or smooth. â—‡ The rough endoplasmic reticulum is a series of connected flattened sacs that have many ribosomes on their outer surface. Rough endoplasmic reticulum synthesizes and secretes serum proteins (such as albumin) in the liver, and hormones (such as insulin) and other substances (such as milk) in the glands. â—‡ The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is tubular in form and is involved in the synthesis of phospholipids, the main lipids in cell membranes. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is the site of the breakdown of toxins and carcinogens in the liver, the conversion of cholesterol into steroids in the gonads and adrenal glands, and the release of calcium ions in the muscles, causing muscle contraction. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum also transports the products of the rough endoplasmic reticulum to other cell parts, notably the Golgi apparatus. See more at cell.

my knowlage: an organelle found inside of some cells often abbreaviated as ER. A rough ER is an ER with ribosomes stuck to it, and a smooth ER is one without ribosomes. the ER is often found around the nucleus. it can sometimes be confused with the Golgi complex because of their similar looking shape.

this is alot of info!!!!!

hope it helps!!!!!!

the endoplasmic reticulum(er) is a large network of membrane bound tubes and sheets.it look like long tubules or round or oblong bags.the er membrane is similar in stucture to the plasma membrane .there are two types of endoplasmic reticulum ... they are rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum .RER looks rough under the microscope because it has particles called ribosomes attached to its surface. The ribosomes which are present in all active cells, are the sites of protein manufacture. The manufacture proteins are then sent to various places in the cell depending on need using er.the SER helps in the manufacture of fat molecules or lipids important for cell function. Some of these proteins and lipids help in building the cell membrane.this process is known as biogenesis. Some other proteins and lipids function as enzymes and hormones.Although the er varies greatly in appereance in different cells,it always forms a network system.

The ER is an organelle of the endomembrane system that is of two main parts; rough and smooth.

The rough part is, basically, tasked with the modification of proteins and the smooth part is tasked with lipid sythesis and detoxification.
