It will do in a container as long as the temperature is kept cool. It has a fairly short growing season so would only be suitable for a short burst of colour.
A container that has growing bacteria must be closed and/or sealed to prevent contamination by other bacteria.

Replacing weeds, soil and all may be the best option. The container needs to be cleaned inside and out. Fresh potting soil then needs to put in place. You have weeds growing, because weed seeds are in the soil. The mix may have been contaminated inadvertently in the original container. Or the weed seeds may have gotten in if the container is left exposed to outside air.
