It sounds like you have a sovereign. Check to see if there is a letter M or S on the ground underneath St George and the Dragon. The M refers to the Melbourne Mint and the S Sydney. If there are no letters underneath then the coin was struck at the Royal Mint in London. If the coin is the S variety then it may be worth a little more than BV (Bullion Value). Currently, as at 13th August 2012, sovereigns have a gold value of £243. This is the minimum amount that your coin is worth. If in mint state and M or S variety it could be worth £300 - £350. However, it has to be 'as struck' as gold wears very easily and even the slightest wear on the highest points would reduce the coin's numismatic value considerably as it would go into the lower EF grade.
