The definition of Grace is 'an unmerited gift.' Amazing means so great that it is beyond imagination. Combined, the term amazing grace is referring to salvation and what an incredibly wonderful gift it is because we really do not deserve salvation.

Amazing Grace was written by an Englishman named John Newton in the late 1700's. He was captain of several slave ships for over 20 years. He repented his sins became a preacher and chose to live the rest of his life in solitude. During this period he wrote the hymn Amazing Grace about himself, his experience, and the revelation that led him to change his life. He also inspired and mentored his young friend William Wilberforce to begin a virtually singlehanded crusade in parliament that would span two decades and result in the abolition of slavery throughout the British empire.
