What are the benefits of religion to society?

Religion is centered on beliefs outside of oneself and the natural world, and includes beliefs in gods, angels afterlife and things supernatural. As such, one can go "outside of oneself" to seek comfort in believing that some supernatural being or force can influence the world around you or influence or guide your own behaviour. The immense comfort that religion brings its believers (no matter what religion) is its greatest benefit and the reason religion survives amid a world of increasing knowledge of science. Mankind's resistance to accepting death as final also brings people to religious beliefs of afterlife for both oneself and for loved ones.

Religion has benefitted society by establishing a working understanding of civil and moral beliefs. For example, most of western and Middle Eastern society is based on the civilising tenets of the Ten Commandments.

A remarkable example of the reverse is how the civil and moral teachings of Confucious in China resulted in the development of a religious system.

On the dark side, however, religion has been the almost exclusive wedge between people since it began, and is often the cause of war, oppression, and genocide. When abused, religion has led to untold neuroses, has squashed people's spirits, intellects, and dreams. It will continue to do so until people take its teachings seriously.
