The tuatara is a lizard-like reptile of New Zealand. According to the New Zealand Department of Conservation, there is just one single species of tuatara, but DNA testing indicates that this one species consists of three distinct variants.
There is the northern tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus punctatus) found on islands from the Bay of Plenty north; the Cook Strait tuatara (S. punctatus) found on Takapourewa (Stephens Island) and the Trio Islands in Marlborough Sounds; and the Brothers Island tuatara (S. guntheri) fount on one island in Marlborough Sounds.
