The name given to Settlers who occupied Unassigned Lands before the land was proclaimed to be open. The name came from the 'sooner clause' of the Act which stated that anyone who entered and occupied land prior to the openoing time would be denied that land

The state Oklahoma is the Sooner State because Even before the land was thrown open to white settlement, many early settlers snuck across the border and made claims there. When the first official settlers were allowed across, they found these "sooners" already in possession of the land that they were hoping to take. This led to the state being called the Sooner State.

When the Oklahoma territories were opened up to the public, there was a huge rush of people flocking to buy land. Some people managed to sneak in before the official opening time, and they were called "sooners".
