A septic tank is a large tank that holds all the waste liquid from a house when there is no sewer in the street. The liquid settles in the tank and flows out a pipe at the other end to a septic field where it gradually seeps into the ground. The solid waste from toilets settles into a floating 'mattress', and in a good system is aerobically diminished by microbial action.

A septic system usually connected to the drainage pipes outside of a building consists of a holding tank and leaching drain field to dispose of domestic or commercial sewage or other liquid waste material. The term septic comes from the Latin to purify. The constitutional task of the septic system is to destroy any pathogens contained in the domestic sewage and prepare the waste water for underground disposal by some means of dispersal through gravity or pressurized piping network.

That is where the city cleans up all the waste from homes and then lets the grey water into septic fields to return to ground. Many cities, especially in Europe now clean and sanitize waste from toilets etc, so it's almost totally clean.

Is the Insinkerator 'Septic Assist' garbage disposal really safe for a septic system?

Yes, Insinkerator uses a Bio-charge system to inject microorganisms into the disposal when it is in use. Waste is broken down by these microorganisms in your septic system which helps keep you septic system functioning properly. I recently purchased a septic disposal from www.overstock.com. Overstock had the cheapest price I could find on the internet and shipping was only $2.95.
