The difference between them lies in their molecular arrangement. Quartz molecules, like those in all crystals, are arranged in a well-organized, regular lattice. Glass, on the other hand, is an amorphous solid. Its molecules are held in place rigidly (unlike a liquid), but their arrangement is disordered. Contrary to popular belief, a glass does not flow slowly in historical human time scales (i.e. in church stained glass windows).
