(1) A psychoactive drug is any chemical substance that changes brain function and results in alterations in perception, mood, or consciousness. They are also called psychopharmaceutical or psychotic drugs. (2) More specifically, it is a chemical which significantly boosts or reduces/blocks brain neurotransmitters - in the case of dopamine, far beyond the usual changes brought about by bio-survival activities like eating food and having sex (eg. heroin boosts dopamine 200% above normal levels, cocaine by 400%, and methamphetamine by up to 1100%).
