A "Lockdown" is where all prisoners are locked in their rooms or whatever room they happen to be in at the time. This is used during times that the officials need to command total control within the prison. Times of riot, fights, searches, etc...

∙ 16y agoUsually means prisoners are confined to cells. No excercise yard. No visitors. Perhaps some cells will be searched for illegal drugs, knives etc. Security is tightened. Guards armed.

At the prison. Calling will do no good. Prison officials will not share the current security status of the prison over the phone, and you could only know by visiting the prison because, depending on the reason for lockdown, there will either be a waiting room full of family members waiting to visit, or they will not allow civilians to enter. No one will tell you officially that the prison is on lockdown.
