When man learned to control fire, eventually the practical uses of clay was discovered. The oldest pottery discovered are crude and broken but they served their purpose. The most common use hundreds of years ago,and still today, is dish ware. Most useful pottery today is mass-produced by poured into plaster, hardened and then fired in house sized kilns. They are then glazed and/or decorated and fired again. As stated above, most dish ware is churned out by factories. Hand-made pieces are more expensive but are more highly prized.

well some clay is from red rocks like how the Indians used to. but some clay is made by man which i do not know the components.lilwill

ADDED: All pottery clays are natural, not man-made; but have to be refined and perhaps have additives mixed with them to render them suitable for consistently good ceramics. The basic minerals in clay are the residues from weathered and eroded rock, particularly granite and similar.

It isn't what it sounds like. It means making pottery on a spinning table. The centrifugal force caused by spinning acts to throw or push the clay out from the center, into round shapes, which are suitable for many pottery objects such as vases, bottles, etc.
