Best Answer

An old, southern term for a small black female child with several small braids that kind of stick out at odd angles. Blacks, as well as any member of our modern society should find this an offensive term and avoid using it.

What is the main reason of Uncle Tom's Cabin?

Uncle Tom's Cabin (published in 1852) was a novel that "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War."It was the bestselling novel of the 19th Century and the second best selling book, following the "Bible". It is credited for helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850's. In the first year it was published it sold 300,000 copies.Harriet-Beecher Stowe (author) wrote the novel with the main character (Uncle Tom), a long suffering black slave around whom the story was focused and other characters, both fellow slaves and slave owners. The sentimental novel depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. The book and even more the plays it inspired, also helped popularize a number of stereotypes about black people, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned "mammy", the "pickaninny" stereo-type of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's cabin have, to an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a "vital antislavery tool."Stowe wrote the novel in response to the 1850 passage of the second Fugitive Slave Act. Much of the book was composed in Brunswick, Main, where her husband, Calvin Ellis Stowe, taught at his alma mater, Bowdoin College.
