A manatee, also known as a sea cow, is a large marine animal that reaches over ten feet long and can weigh more than a ton (2000 pounds).

Manatees are freshwater mammals that live in the waters off the coast of Florida (some have been spotted as far north as North Carolina in warmer months). They are on the endangered species list and, although curious and gentle, should only be viewed from a distance so as not to let them believe humans are nice. It is illegal to hurt them in any way and is even illegal to feed them. Most manatees have scars from boat motors as they tend to swim close to the surface and blend in well with their environment. Their closest living relative is the elephant.

Unfortuneatly they are hunted (illegally ) for their blubber and in some cases hunted for food.

Manatees are water-dwelling mammals that feed on plant life. They are commonly known as the "sea cow", however they are not related to cows. there closest living relatives are elephants, hyraxes, and aardvarks. Manatees are gentle giants. They live in shallow, coral reefs.

Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. There are three accepted living species of Trichechidae, representing three of the four living species in the order Sirenia: the Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), and the West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis). They measure up to 13 feet/4 meters long, weigh as much as 1300 pounds/600 kilograms [1], and have paddle-like flippers. The name manatí comes from the Taíno, a pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean, meaning "breast".[2]
