a magnetically soft material can be a magnetically "charged" by exposing it to a very large electromagnetic field (around 600 volts and various currents according to 'how it works') In another definition, a small current can be used to temporarily magnetise a magnetically soft material (iron, nickel or cobalt) some magnetism may remain in the object after current is removed, too.

Take a transformer which has been considered inoperative. Dismantle and take off thin wire out of it. It will be an insulated one. Now wind this over an iron nail with many number of turns say some 50 or 100. Then pass current through this using a cell. As you take pins near by the nail those will be attracted by the nail as the nail gets magnetised because of current flow. Often as we do this, soon the nail will become a magnet permanently
