There are many kinds of lung disease. Cancer can be caused by inhalation of carcinogenics such as cigarette smoke & asbestos. Smoking can also cause emphysema. A common lung disease in the elderly is COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Here, the body retains CO2 (carbon dioxide) leaving the patient feeling short of breath as they aren't clearing the CO2 and replaing it with oxygen. the most common respiratory disorder is Asthma which can be found in people of all ages.

By "pulmonary lung disease," I assume you are talking about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

COPD is a disease that affects your lungs by reducing it's ability to receive and process oxygen by either narrowing the airways for oxygen to flow or by the overproduction of mucus in the lungs, which interferes with the lungs abilities to transport free oxygen into your blood.

COPDs main cause is cigarette smoke, but long-term exposure to smoke, smog, chemicals, or other air pollutants are also at risk.

Symptoms of COPD usually include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up mucus, or a tightness of the chest.

COPD should not be confused with asthma, as asthma is treatable and the effects can be reduced with medication (or "puffers"). COPD is, as of right now, untreatable. We are unable to reverse the damage done to the lungs. Even worse is the fact that this disease worsens over time, and people who suffer from this condition will eventually have to change their lifestyles in order to cope with it.
