it is not bad it simply mean you were unable to perform for some personal reason you do not have to disclose most times after six months it turns into an honorable if you dont get in trouble with the law you can go through the army review board and ask for and upgrade in discharge status and they will review you request and more than likely give it to ya

The above information is incorrect.

A General (Under Honorable Conditions) characterization is warranted when a member's service has been honest and faithful, but significant negative aspects of service outweigh the positive aspects of that service.

Characterization of service NEVER has and NEVER will automatically upgrade to Honorable after six months. This is urban legend. If you apply to the Army Discharge Review Board (DRB) they will not just give it to you. You must prove inequity or impropriety in you separation proceedings or in your assigned characterization and/or separation code. Very few applications recieve the relief they are seeking.

You probably won't be able to reenlist into any branch of the military, and you may lose your VA benefits. Other than that, life goes on. It's not the same as a dishonourable discharge.

Is there a military discharge as general -other than honorable conditions?

There are actually seven different types of discharge characterization: Uncharacterized - For entry level separations where the member has served less than 180 days when notifed of administrative separation. This can be recieved for a variety of different reasons. With respect to non-service related matters such as VA benefits, civilian employment etc, shall be considered as the equivilent of an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) Honorable - an Honorable discharge is warranted when the quality of a member's service has met the standards of accepted conduct and performance of duty for military personnel. General under honorable conditions - is appropriate if the member's service has been honest and faithful, but significant negative aspects of the member's conduct or performance outweighs positive aspects of the member's military record. Under Other Than Honorable Conditions (OTH) - is warranted when a member engages in conduct involving one or more acts or omissions that constitute a significant departure from the conduct expected of members of the armed forces. Bad Conduct - Is assigned as part of the sentence at Special or General court-martial. Dishonorable - The least favorable characterization. Recieved as part of the sentence at General court-martial. Dismissal - Equivilent to a Dishonorable, but reserved for commissioned officers. Recieved as part of the sentence at General court-martial.

How do you determine what your veterans disability benefit will be?

The patient vet doesn't make that determination. The VA does that after examining him. They set the value mark, and it will be done in percentages (%). 10% disabled, etc. Actually, benefits are derived based on the character of the veterans discharge. Once a year the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) publishes a booklet that describes (generally) all the veterans benefits. If a veteran has an honorable discharge, he/she is eligible for all (should he/she meet the requirments). If he/she has a general discharge, the veteran is not eligible for education benefits (GI Bill). If the Veteran has an "other than honorable" discharge, it is up to the DVA to determine if he/she will be paid for compensation for service connected disabilities and will determine if the other benefits will be paid out as well. If the veteran has a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD), he/she can be buried in a Veteran Cemetary but isn't eligible for much else. A dishonorable discharge excludes the veteran from all benefits. It is a misconception that if you get less than an honorable discharge that your whole time in the service is characterized by the listed character of discharge. An example would be: Let's say an individual was selling drugs and was given a BCD discharge. It was determined by the evidence he was selling in the last six months of his/her service. If he/she had served three years prior to that, that service is considered honorable. The Veteran needs to apply for benefits for that three year period which is deemed HONORABLE, thus all benefits would apply.

Why was Albert DeSalvo dishonorably discharged from the army?

Simply, he wasn't. He had a Court-Marshall for molesting a child, but was still given an Honorable Discharge.

How Long Does it take for a general under honorable condition to upgrade to a honorable discharge?

It doesn't. The only way for a General (under honorable conditions) discharge to be upgraded is to go before the Board of appeals. Even then, your chances of getting an upgrade are slim (less than 1%) Even in the best of situations, if you did successfully appeal and get an upgrade, it would still be on your records because that (Honorable) was not the original characterization of discharge, and there is a code that identifies it as such. The above answer is partially correct. The characterization of service does not automatically upgrade to Honorable...ever. Members can apply to the Discharge Review Board (DRB) for their respective service to be considered for a change of characterization. Upgrades are few and far between.
