Ferns have sexual mode of reproduction.

Also ferns can only reproduce where there is sufficient moisture to transfer their motile male gametes to the archegonia for fertilization. Mainly ferns are reproduced by spores and at a time in the year they grow small spots under their leaves, known as sori. Each sorus has several sporangia where spores (micro & megaspores) are produced. Sexual reproduction in ferns takes place by spores in sporophytic phase and by reproductive organs i. e. anthredia and archegonia in gametophytic phase. Thus, the reproduction in ferns is achieved by alternation of generation.

Alternation of generation is the reproductive process in tree ferns. We know that there are two generations that alternate with each other- sporophyte and gametophyte.

Sporophyte is the asexual phase of the process in which leaves with sporangia are formed that contain the spores. These spores are dispersed by wind and when land in a suitable place (for ferns damp places are most suitable) they give raise to gametophyte generation.

Now gametophyte is the sexual phase. It's a small heart shaped plant which forms male and female gametes. Then the fusion of these two gametes takes place, it's what we call fertilization, and finally a zygote is formed which develops into a tree fern.
